  • On the trail of old Gallic gold mines (the aurières) rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th century. During the Gallic and Gallo-Roman period, several gold deposits were exploited, including the one located in the Bois des Creusots. These open-cast mines, also provided with galleries which have now disappeared, are still visible in the form of immense pits lined with mounds of rubble, called cavaliers.

Start / Finish - Forgeas 23400 St Dizier Leyrenne Parking: Forgeas, along the road At the hike explanation panel, turn left. After crossing Forgeas, turn left into a path that immediately splits into 3. Follow the middle path. 1 - Arriving on the road from La Villatte to Cornat, turn right towards La Villatte, turn almost immediately into a track on the left. Notice in the field on the right a mound in fallow land, site of the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa. 2 - At the next crossroads of tracks, just before joining a road, turn right towards the bench. 3 - At the top of the hill, take the left path which leads straight to Baloumier. 4 - On the village “square”, turn right, towards la villatte. Continue on the road to La Villatte then, in front of an isolated farm, turn left on a track which will bring you back to the Croix de La Mine. 5 - Take the path to the right of the monument as far as a cross surmounted by a helmet, continue the path which joins the road between La Villatte and Chauverne, at the level of a stall. Follow the road to the left. 6 - At the entrance to Chauverne, turn right into a wide track. Shortly after, in a big curve, you will be able to observe the panorama. 7 - Leave the main track and follow the path to the isolated farm that you see on the hillside. You thus arrive at the house of the keeper of the mines _. Take the path furthest to the left which leads you to the site of the aurières de Forgeas-St Chartrier. At the edge of the wood, the path turns square, thus avoiding the first pit to go along it. Advance on a small promontory which will allow you to appreciate the extent of the excavations, then continue until the exit of the wood. On your left, construction banners mark the location of a deep well _. Retrace your steps to the caretaker's house and continue opposite by the tarmac road. A new panorama extends to your right. At the next crossroads, head left towards the Bois des Creusots site. The road passes between the old aurières, clearly visible. 8 - At the crossroads with the D44, turn right, soon joining a signposted circuit coming from Mourioux. 9 - At the bend of a bend, our path joins a second signposted circuit, coming from Ceyroux. Turn right into the wood. After the sunken path, you will see on your right the impressive slope of the largest of the aurières observed from the road. 10 - In the crossroads, we take the right path which bypasses a meadow on leaving the woods to join the wide track which goes from Forgeas to Cornat. Continue around the meadow on the right to join the road and descend to Forgeas, at the starting point of the small loop
