In 1940, Aristides de Sousa Mendes, Consul of Portugal in Bordeaux, in disobedience to his government, issued nearly 30,000 visas between June 16 and 25, saving tens of thousands of refugees.
Inspired by the Jewish tradition of placing a pebble on the grave of the person whose memory is to be honored, visual artist LN Le Cheviller chose to pay tribute to the Consul by drawing and collecting 30,000 pebble designs.
