An absolute masterpiece of the classical repertoire, Tchaikovsky?s Swan Lake is a work born of a tender idea: a show imagined for his nieces, inspired by Nordic legends and populated by mysterious swans. Composed between 1875 and 1879, this white ballet tells the poignant story of young girls transformed into swans by an evil spell. Long misunderstood, this music of infinite gentleness and melancholy was consecrated in 1895, thanks to the now mythical choreography of Marius Petipa, master of the Russian Imperial Ballet.
Today, Swan Lake is quite simply the most famous and most performed ballet in the world.
