The Château de Montaigut-le-Blanc, protected since 1945 for its historical, geographical and landscape interest, bears witness to a rich medieval heritage. Once the seat of a garrison and a refuge for populations in search of safety, this strategic fort dominated the Gartempe valley and was the chief town of a castellany extending over six parishes. The name “Montaigut” – derived from mons acutus – is a reminder of the elevated position of this emblematic site.
While the eastern part of the castle bears the scars of a romantic ruin, the stately home still standing bears witness to the castle’s former splendour, once the property of such great families as Rochechouart, Naillac, Brachet and Jumilhac. Surrounded by a dry moat that ingeniously complements the natural escarpment, the building was, over the course of the centuries, transformed into a fortress.Over the centuries, the building has borne witness to a seigneurial power endowed with important prerogatives.
From the middle of the 18th century, the castle, abandoned and in danger of disappearing, saw its prestige revived thanks to the restoration undertaken in 1976 by M. and Mme Bonfils. Mr and Mrs Bonfils, who partially restored the seigniorial dwelling and brought back to life the architectural features that had been damaged by time. Today, its roof terrace, rising to over twenty metres, offers a 360° panoramic view of the surrounding hills and villages, inviting visitors on a journey that is both historic and contemplative, to the heart of an exceptional heritage site.
