The Senatorial Museum

The Musée de Guéret is unlike any other museum. The only one of its kind in the Limousin region, this multi-disciplinary museum showcases exceptional works on a number of key themes.

Created in 1832 by the Société des Sciences de la Creuse, it occupies the former Hôtel de la Sénatorerie and reflects the eclecticism of its donors.

It was particularly well known for

    • a natural history room featuring animals from five continents
    • Flemish, Italian and French painting from the 16th to the 20th centuries
    • sculpture, with Rodin, Carpeaux, Quinquaud and others
    • painters from the Creuse Valley, including Guillaumin, Madeline and Alluaud
    • Limousin enamelware
    • Asian arts: China, Japan…
    • Egyptian, Gallo-Roman and medieval archaeology

And in the meantime… ?

While the museum is closed to the public for restructuring and work on its collections, an outdoor trail is being set up in Guéret town centre. There are around ten panels tracing the history of the museum and its rich and varied collections. These include the painters of the Creuse Valley, Limousin enamels, Maurice Leloir and many others…

A leaflet is available from the Greater Guéret Tourist Office, Guéret Town Hall and at the entrance to the Jardin Public Ferdinand Villard.

What are the plans for the future?

    • The creation of a modern extension to house the new storerooms, which will be directly accessible from the museum.
    • Storage facilities that fully comply with museum standards, guaranteeing the preservation of the collections and enabling them to be expanded.
    • Consolidation of the Présidial collections on the same site
    • A new educational room for school groups
    • A new library and documentation area accessible to students and researchers
    • A new reception area and a redesigned opening onto the city
    • A museum that is fully accessible and fully compliant with safety and security standards
    • A redesigned tour route and increased exhibition space, particularly for temporary exhibitions

Who’s involved in the project?

The project management competition to restructure the museum was won by Paris-based Basalt Architecture (lead agency), in association with Fabienne Vandenbrouck for preventive conservation and the Benoit Lacointa landscape studio for the landscaping aspects of the programme.
