Famous for its 17th-century woodwork... Moutier d'Ahun, the village with a Baroque emphasis : this pretty village is situated on the banks of the Creuse. It remains very authentic with low houses, its mediaeval bridge which crosses the river and surrounded by its pastures. This entrancing site has a marvellous Romanesque church famous for its 17th-century woodwork, carved by Simon Bauer and his companions during the Baroque period. This church was part of a Benedictine monastery founded in 997. The woodwork is abundant in fruit, the faces of angels and fantasy characters. This unique ensemble forms a work of art and mixes Gothic, Romanesque and Baroque art; the entrance is a magnificent, flamboyantly Gothic gate.
