Notre-Dame-du-Château Church, a Gothic-style edifice, was built in a single campaign starting in 1478. Its Languedoc-style architecture, characterized by a polygonal chevet, a wide nave and side chapels simply separated by buttress walls, is highly original for the region. These surprising influences can be explained by the fact that Pierre de Bourbon, who commissioned the work, was also Count of Castres. Architects and workers from the Languedoc region must have succeeded one another on the site.

During the 19th century, it became the chapel of the nearby college. In 1807, after the demolition of the Sainte-Croix chapel, the Penitents Noirs took over the gallery of the Notre-Dame church as their home. In 1847, following roadworks on Rue du Château, the west portal was repaired and a staircase built inside the building.
